Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – The High Court, presided over by Justice Ebrima Jaiteh, has admitted critical pieces of evidence in the ongoing trial of Ousainou Bojang, who stands accused of fatally shooting two police constables in 2023. The court admitted the Sukuta Police Station diary covering the period from September 12 to September 28, 2023, and a smartphone, both of which are central to the case.
During the proceedings, defense counsel Lamin J. Darboe moved to have the station diary admitted into evidence. With no objection from the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), Abdul Maita Yusuf, the judge granted the application, marking the diary entries as Exhibit D17, covering pages 1 to 41.
The smartphone, which had been at the center of a technical inquiry, was also admitted into evidence. Earlier, the court had requested a technician to assist in unlocking the device, which was protected by a personal identification number (PIN).
The defense argued that the phone, presented by the DPP, had been reset and protected with a PIN by the police, rendering it inaccessible to the accused.
Yusuf Kaba, an IT technician, appeared before the court to address the issue. He explained that resetting a phone often requires the user’s Google account credentials to restore access to stored information. However, the accused, Ousainou Bojang, testified that he could not remember the credentials but noted that the details were recorded in a diary at his home.
Defense counsel Darboe requested an adjournment to allow the accused’s brother to retrieve the diary containing the Google account credentials. The DPP raised no objection, and Justice Jaiteh granted the adjournment. The case is scheduled to resume on February 17, 2025.
This trial continues to draw significant attention as the court examines evidence crucial to determining the events surrounding the tragic deaths of the two police officers.
