The United Democratic Party (UDP), the main opposition party in The Gambia, is facing internal turmoil as several high-profile members resign from their positions.

The latest resignation came from Salifu Sonko, an executive member of the UDP youths diaspora, who stepped down from his role as the party’s deputy secretary general for the diaspora. The Gambia Journal has learned that Sonko cited personal reasons for his decision to resign, without providing specific details. However, he expressed gratitude to the UDP party leadership for the opportunity to serve.

The departure of Sonko follows a trend of prominent UDP members leaving the party. This development has caused disappointment and frustration among many militants within the party.

Former UDP campaign manager, Momodou Sabally, recently defected to the National Peoples’ Party (NPP) and commented on Facebook, “Another big plus for the NPP – This is major league! The youths are #happy.”

Sabally’s post suggests that Sonko is likely to join the NPP, the ruling party in The Gambia. Although Ousainou Darboe and his militants have shown strong resilience capacities over the years,  the recent resignations and defections could have significant implications for the UDP as it prepares for upcoming political challenges.
