The Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science, and Technology (MoHERST) handed over the construction site for student dormitories at the University of The Gambia Faraba Banta Campus to the MRC Holland Foundation and Brighter Future on January 17, 2024.
Pace Construction Company’s Master Plan categorizes dormitories into three components: student housing, staff housing, and vice chancellor’s housing, with priority given to student housing, divided into two phases.
In addition, there will be a library, mini-market, cafeteria, food preparation room, storage area, play area, laundry room, and hair salon in the dorm for students.
Professor Pierre Gomez, The Gambia’s Minister of Higher Education, Research, and Technology, praised the MRC Holland Foundation and Brighter Future for their support. Gomez said the presentation of the master plan design would allow feedback.
According to Minister Gomez, the government of The Gambia has been honoring its pledge to provide top-notch, internationally compliant dorm accommodations for students. He went on to say that when the students graduate, the facility will provide an environment that is highly favorable for them. Most significantly, he said, the facility will also take into account the needs of those with disabilities, particularly with regard to access.
Dr. Henrietta Sonko, Coordinator of the MRC Holland Foundation, expressed gratitude for the partnership with MoHERST on a national project. She pledged to review and finalize the Master Plan design with the Ministry and praised MoHERST Minister Pierre Gomez for pushing for transformation.
Mrs. Yama Samateh Lowe, Coordinator at Brighter Future, appreciated the Ministry’s partnership and site handover for dormitory construction, emphasizing the importance of tertiary and higher education in building a sustainable economy.
Dr. Yusupha Touray, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, presided over the event.
