Touma Njie and three other West African parliamentarians from across the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) have been recognized and honored by the Association of West African Legislative Correspondents (AWALCO) for their exceptional commitment, dedication, and contributions to deepening democracy, raising living standards, and driving quality policy direction in the region.
Rt. Hon. Fatoumatta Njai, a member of the ECOWAS Parliament from The Gambia, was honored as a champion for women’s liberation and child care, as well as for her vital role in procuring resources for programs that empower women and girls.
Hon. Sidie Mohamed Tunis, Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament from Sierra Leone, was praised for his transparency, openness to the press, and unwavering commitment to direct elections, good governance, and regional integration.
Hon. Awaji Abiante, a Nigerian member of the ECOWAS Parliament, was acknowledged for his forceful and rigorous contributions to parliamentary discourse, intellectual performance, and commitment to participate in fruitful debates.
Hon. Vilane Abdoulaye, a Senegalese member of the ECOWAS Parliament, was also recognized for his ardent and persistent efforts to improve the legislative process, as well as his steadfast commitment to the well-being of citizens in the region.
Innocent Odoh, President of AWALCO, underscored the organization’s commitment to assisting the ECOWAS Parliament in carrying out its vital duty.
He also emphasized the need for media and legislative partnership in raising awareness, organizing individuals, and encouraging regional unity.
The inaugural AWALCO merit awards serve as a striking reminder of the critical role that lawmakers play in defining West Africa’s future. By recognizing and appreciating their accomplishments.
