Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – After nearly two years on the run, fugitive Bouba Drammeh has been arrested in Senegal and handed over to Gambian authorities following a coordinated security operation between the Gambia Police Force (GPF) and Senegalese law enforcement.
Drammeh, who escaped from Mile 2 Prison in 2022, was wanted for the alleged murder of Babucarr Jammeh during a violent land dispute between Gunjur and Berending in 2020. His escape from lawful custody had raised serious concerns about security lapses, but authorities have now reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring fugitives are held accountable.
According to a statement from the GPF, intelligence efforts led to the discovery of Drammeh’s whereabouts in the Casamance region of Senegal. Gambian security forces, working in close collaboration with their Senegalese counterparts, launched an operation to track him down. The Senegalese gendarmerie eventually apprehended him and formally handed him over to Gambian authorities.
“This arrest sends a clear message that there is no hiding place for criminals, whether in or outside The Gambia,” the police statement emphasized.
Gambian authorities had dispatched officers to Senegal as soon as they received intelligence about Drammeh’s location. Their efforts, coupled with the cooperation of Senegalese security agencies, culminated in his successful capture.
Drammeh is now back in Gambian custody, where he is expected to face trial for murder as well as additional charges related to his escape from Mile 2. His recapture marks a significant breakthrough in law enforcement cooperation between The Gambia and Senegal, reinforcing both countries’ commitment to tackling cross-border crime.
Authorities have assured the public that further investigations are ongoing and that anyone found complicit in aiding his escape will also face justice.
