Senegal’s president-elect, Diomaye Faye, made his first official visit to the Dakar Palace on Thursday, accompanied by Ousmane Sonko, leader of Pastef. The meeting with outgoing President Macky Sall focused on important state matters and the upcoming transfer of power on April 2. However, Sonko’s presence has overshadowed the encounter and sparked speculations.

As Diomaye Faye arrived at the presidential mansion, the scene was almost surreal. Stepping out of a Mercedes, he greeted President Sall while the palace governor and a member of the Guard looked on.

Meanwhile, Ousmane Sonko, dressed simply in a tunic, stood at a distance, appearing somewhat out of place. His presence added an intriguing element to the encounter, overshadowed by the looming transition of power.

The meeting, described by the Presidency as “marked by courtesy,” involved discussions between President Sall and Diomaye Faye regarding key state issues and the upcoming inauguration and handover ceremony.

The viral spread of images from the meeting was largely due to Sonko’s attendance, which overshadowed the protocol surrounding President Sall and his successor. Sonko’s role in the protocol remains enigmatic, especially considering his potential involvement in a vice presidency project alongside Diomaye Faye.

Though Diomaye was not yet sworn in, Sonko’s presence was conspicuous and more fascinating because Ousmane Sonko’s tutelary shadow follows Bassirou Diomaye Faye.

While speculation swirls about Sonko’s future role, the meeting between the outgoing and incoming presidents symbolizes the peaceful transfer of power in Senegal’s democratic process.
