Gambiaj.com – (KANIFING, The Gambia) – The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has announced a by-election for the Massembeh Ward in the Mansakonko Administrative Area, following the passing of Councilor Bakary Korita. The election is set to take place on Saturday, February 22, 2025, to fill the vacancy left by the late councilor.
In a statement issued on January 6, 2025, the IEC outlined the timeline and procedures for the by-election. The nomination of candidates will be conducted over a four-day period, from Wednesday, February 5, to Saturday, February 8, 2025. Prospective candidates can submit their nominations daily between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. at the IEC Mansakonko Regional Office. Nomination forms will be made available for collection at the same office starting January 20, 2025.
The official campaign period for the by-election will commence on Monday, February 10, and conclude on Thursday, February 20, 2025. During this time, candidates and their supporters are expected to adhere to electoral rules to ensure a peaceful and transparent process.
Alieu Momarr Njai, Chairman of the IEC, emphasized the Commission’s commitment to maintaining fair play, integrity, and transparency throughout the electoral process.
The by-election presents an opportunity for residents of Massembeh Ward to elect a new representative to the Mansakonko Area Council. Voters, candidates, and stakeholders are encouraged to actively participate in this democratic exercise.
This development follows the practice of upholding local governance in The Gambia, ensuring that communities are adequately represented in decision-making processes.
