IEC Announces January 2026 Council By-Elections in Brikama and Mansakonko

Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – The Gambia’s Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has announced that council by-elections will be held on Saturday, 10th January 2026, to fill vacant councillorship positions in the Brikama and Mansakonko Administrative Areas.

According to a press release issued on Wednesday, 26th November 2025, the vacancies affect two wards: Bantanjang Ward and Kaiaf Ward.

The IEC stated that the elections are being conducted in line with Section 23 of the Local Government Act, which mandates by-elections to fill vacant council seats.

Nomination and Campaign Timelines

Nomination of candidates will take place from 25th to 27th December 2025, between 8:00am and 4:00pm, at the IEC Regional Offices in Sibanor and Mansakonko.

Aspiring candidates can begin collecting nomination papers from the same regional offices starting 4th December 2025.

The IEC further announced that the official campaign period will run from 29th December 2025 to 8th January 2026, giving candidates ten days to canvass support ahead of polling.

Signed by IEC Chairman Joseph Colley, the statement reinforces the Commission’s commitment to “fair play, integrity, and transparency” in the conduct of the upcoming polls.

With the January vote marking the first council by-elections of 2026, political parties and independent aspirants are expected to begin mobilizing in the coming weeks.
