Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has dismissed claims circulating on social media that it issued a statement in relation with a stern warning to the National Democratic Party (NDP), led by Keba Madi Bojang, for violating electoral laws.
Recent online reports suggested the IEC had issued a statement cautioning the NDP to halt its activities until the party is formally registered. However, information obtained by The Gambia Journal shows no such statement has been issued: “We were taken aback by the sudden appearance and rapid propagation of this material on social media.”
Our sources said “Keba Madi and his crew only had one initial contact, a close door meeting with our administration and it ended there. Maybe someone somewhere is expecting to gain relevance from this,” an IEC insider said.
Although Keba Madi and his team have visited the IEC to inquire about registration procedures, sources confirm that the NDP has yet to submit the full documentation and fees required to become a legally recognized political party.
Despite this, some members of Bojang’s entourage have signaled their intention to continue political activities, citing the precedent of President Adama Barrow’s National People’s Party (NPP), which operated informally before its official registration.
The IEC says it is aware of the high risk of misinformation ahead of the charged 2026 electoral calendar and is closely monitoring new political entrants to ensure transparency and compliance with the law.
In contrast to the NDP’s incomplete registration, political aspirants Ousman Gagigo and Papa Faal have already filed comprehensive applications to register their parties.
Gagigo recently announced his political ambitions, while Faal, who initially sought an independent presidential bid in 2021 before withdrawing, has now joined the party registration race.
Both men, known for their outspoken political views, are expected to inject new dynamics into The Gambia’s political landscape as the countdown to the 2026 elections intensifies.
