IMF Seeks Clarity from Senegal Before Resuming Financial Support, Says Abebe Aemro Selassie

The head of the Africa Department of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Abebe Aemro Selassie, received by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye in Dakar.

Gambiaj.com – (Dakar, Senegal) – The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has outlined specific conditions that Senegal must fulfill before financial support can resume, according to Abebe Aemro Selassie, Director of the IMF’s African Department. Speaking on the matter, Selassie emphasized that the IMF remains committed to assisting Senegal but requires the government to meet key economic and policy prerequisites to ensure stability and sustainability.

The IMF is ready to engage with Senegal, but certain economic and governance measures need to be in place before we can move forward,” Selassie stated. He underscored the importance of fiscal discipline, transparency in public expenditure, and sustainable debt management as fundamental requirements.

Senegal, under the leadership of President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, has initiated economic reforms aimed at restructuring public finances and reducing reliance on external borrowing.

However, the IMF has signaled that further adjustments are necessary to restore confidence and ensure that any financial assistance aligns with the country’s long-term economic objectives.

Selassie also highlighted concerns about macroeconomic stability, stressing that the government must implement policies that foster economic growth while keeping inflation and fiscal deficits under control. He noted that while Senegal’s economic prospects remain promising, prudent financial management is essential to maintaining investor confidence and attracting further international support.

We need greater clarity, particularly regarding incorrect indicators,” Selassie told the press. “Before we can discuss financial support, it is crucial to resolve these issues and fully understand the government’s priorities for a new program.” He is awaiting the final government figures in the coming weeks.

The IMF’s stance comes as Senegal seeks to navigate complex economic challenges, including the impact of global economic shifts and rising debt levels. The government has expressed its willingness to work with international partners, including the IMF, to implement necessary reforms while safeguarding social spending and economic development initiatives.

As discussions continue, all eyes will be on the Senegalese government’s response to the IMF’s conditions and the potential roadmap for securing renewed financial assistance. Observers note that successful engagement with the IMF could bolster Senegal’s economic recovery efforts and reinforce its position as a key player in the West African economic landscape.
