In police Murder Trial, Ousainou Bojang’s Two Defense Witnesses Testify

Ousainou-Bojang

Gambiaj.com – (Banjul, The Gambia) – The trial of Ousainou Bojang, the man accused of fatally shooting two police officers in September 2023, resumed this week with two new witnesses taking the stand in his defense. Bojang, who is being tried alongside his sister, Amie Bojang, has consistently denied the charges leveled against him.

On Monday, the defense called its second and third witnesses to testify before the High Court. Led by defense counsel Lamin J. Darboe, the second defense witness (DW2), Sulayman Faal, gave a detailed account of his interactions with the accused on the night of the alleged incident.

Faal, a resident of Brufut and a tenant at the lodge where Bojang worked as a security guard, testified that on the night of September 12, 2023, Bojang had visited his room around 11 p.m. and mentioned seeing a report on “What’s On Gambia” about the fatal shooting of two police officers.

He told me to be careful when going out at night,” Faal recalled, noting that Bojang’s warning was the first time he heard about the shooting. Faal stated that he had been living at the lodge for four months and had no reason to believe Bojang was involved in the crime.

Faal further testified that the next day, while at the pool with his partner, a man named Famara informed him that Bojang was being accused of the shooting. “I told him that couldn’t be possible because it was Ousainou who first informed me of the incident,” Faal said.

During cross-examination, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) challenged the credibility and impartiality of Faal’s testimony. The DPP questioned whether Faal’s testimony was influenced by personal loyalty to Bojang. Faal denied this, saying, “I’ll only defend him if I believe he’s right. If he’s wrong, I’ll advise him to apologize.”

The DPP also asked Faal whether Bojang had mentioned any travel plans on the morning following the incident. Faal confirmed that Bojang greeted him that morning but made no mention of travel intentions.

The third defense witness (DW3), Famara Bojang, also took the stand. He identified himself as a relative of both Ousainou and Amie Bojang. According to Famara, Ousainou contacted him on the day of the incident to apologize for a misunderstanding involving his white girlfriend.

Famara testified that Bojang claimed his social media accounts had been hacked and blamed the woman for spreading private messages and images. He further stated that Bojang showed him photos on his phone of the woman he believed was responsible.

Ousainou also expressed intentions to apologize to their stepfather, whom he had previously avoided during family visits.

The court adjourned proceedings to May 27, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., when the defence is expected to present the evidence-in-chief of its third witness.

The trial, which has gripped public attention, continues as Bojang maintains his innocence in one of the most high-profile criminal cases in recent Gambian history.
