Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – The Inter Party Committee (IPC), with the support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), has established three regional branches of the National Women Branch of the Inter Party Committee (WOBIPC). This initiative aims to foster greater participation of Gambian women in politics. The new branches are located in the Upper River Region (URR), Central River Region (CRR), and Lower River Region (LRR).
The establishment of these branches is expected to catalyze enhanced political engagement and leadership among women. Each branch comprises two female representatives from registered political parties.
Samba Baldeh, Co-Chairperson of IPC, highlighted the importance of women’s participation in politics, stating, “Women’s political participation is crucial for the sustenance of peace and development.” He noted that historically, Gambian women have primarily supported politicians despite being the largest voting demographic. This initiative seeks to change that norm by encouraging women to realize their potential and pursue leadership positions in politics.
“It is high time we have women as party leaders because the positions are not for men alone. Youth and women in the 21st century are more connected in terms of development,” Baldeh added. He emphasized that, despite their potential, women remain underrepresented in political structures at both national and regional levels.
Haja Fatou Sillah, a participant, praised the IPC and UNDP for empowering women through this initiative. She said the meeting provided a better understanding of women’s roles in politics and national development. Sillah urged the continuation of such initiatives to reduce underrepresentation and foster greater political involvement among women. She also called on the government to empower women in all aspects, noting that women contribute significantly during political campaigns but are often overlooked afterward. Sillah encouraged her fellow women to support each other, set aside political differences, and apply for more positions, emphasizing that they are the strength of the country.
Fatou Jallow, Women Co-Chair of IPC, elaborated on the objectives of WOBIPC, which include promoting peace and stability and empowering women. She stressed the importance of hearing the voices of rural women in politics, explaining that politics should not be limited to urban areas. Therefore, empowering rural women to participate effectively in politics is essential.
Fatima Sonko, UNDP’s Program Analyst, described the initiative as a significant milestone in promoting gender equality and enhancing women’s participation in leadership and decision-making roles in The Gambia. She explained that while women make up over half of the Gambian population, their participation in leadership roles remains low. The April 2022 elections highlighted this critical gap. Sonko emphasized that the initiative aims not just to increase numbers but to transform the political landscape to be more inclusive and representative.
“We aim to pave the way for a more equitable political landscape in The Gambia, ultimately leading to increased female representation in elected offices,” she noted.
The establishment of these regional branches marks a significant step towards achieving gender equality in Gambian politics, ensuring that women have a stronger voice and presence in leadership and decision-making processes.
