Gambiaj.com – (Banjul, The Gambia) – The Ministry of Interior has ordered a “swift and comprehensive investigation“ after expressing serious concern over allegations of malicious activities emerging after the recent public destruction of seized prohibited drugs and related substances by the Drug Law Enforcement Agency of The Gambia (DLEAG).
In a press statement, the Ministry, which oversees DLEAG, reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and accountability in the handling of confiscated drugs, from seizure to destruction. The annual exercise of destroying seized substances is intended to underscore the government’s zero-tolerance policy on drug trafficking and abuse.
However, reports of alleged misconduct have cast a shadow on this year’s initiative. “These allegations, if proven, undermine the integrity of our fight against drug trafficking and abuse, as well as the collective efforts to safeguard public health and national security,” the Ministry said.
To address the allegations, the Ministry has directed the Gambia Police Force to conduct a swift and comprehensive investigation. Officials have vowed to uncover the truth, hold any responsible parties accountable, and restore public confidence in the government’s anti-drug efforts.
“The investigation will leave no stone unturned,” the statement emphasized. “The Ministry will not tolerate any form of misconduct, negligence, or complicity that may undermine the trust of The Gambian people in our institutions.”
The government also urged the public to cooperate with law enforcement by providing relevant information to support the investigation. “A united front against drugs is essential to achieving a safer, healthier, and drug-free Gambia,” the Ministry added.
The destruction of seized drugs remains a cornerstone of the government’s anti-drug strategy. The Ministry stresses that safeguarding the integrity of this process is critical to ensuring the success of its broader fight against drug trafficking and abuse.
The government has reiterated its dedication to protecting public health, maintaining national security, and upholding the rule of law. The Ministry reassured Gambians of its determination to strengthen anti-drug measures and ensure that any actions undermining these efforts are met with swift justice.
As investigations proceed, the Ministry calls on all citizens to remain vigilant and cooperate in safeguarding the nation’s stability and security.
