Gambiaj.com – (Banjul, the Gambia)- The National Assembly’s Special Select Committee has wrapped up a week-long tour of assets linked to former President Yahya Jammeh, but questions continue to loom over transparency and accountability in the management of these properties.

From September 1 to 4, the Committee inspected vehicles and properties tied to Jammeh, assessing their condition, ownership, and the circumstances surrounding their disposal. Locations included the State House Garage in Banjul, the State Guards Workshop (formerly MSA), the National Museum, Banjul International Airport, Jammeh’s former residence in Kanilai, and farms in Sifoe, Banjulnding, and Farato.

The visits were meant to equip the committee members with first-hand evidence. Yet, the decision to bar journalists from accompanying the Committee during these site inspections has raised fresh concerns. Many Gambians say shutting out the media undermined public transparency in a process already clouded by suspicion of mismanagement.

The Janneh Commission, which initially investigated Jammeh’s wealth, had urged tighter safeguards to prevent misuse and to ensure that proceeds from seized assets benefit the Gambian people. But years later, Gambians still lack clarity on whether those recommendations have been meaningfully implemented.

The Committee is expected to resume sittings with public hearings on Monday, September 8, coinciding with the opening of the Third Ordinary Session of the National Assembly. Its final report will be closely scrutinized as a test of the legislature’s seriousness in holding institutions and individuals accountable in the post-Jammeh era.
