Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – Justice Ebriama Jaiteh of The Gambia’s High Court has on Thursday delivered an inspiring lecture to the full-time Diploma in Legal Practice students, July intake 2024. The lecture, which focused on ethics, dedication, and continuous learning, provided valuable insights for the next generation of legal professionals.
Justice Jaiteh underscored the pivotal role of integrity, professionalism, and accountability in the legal profession, highlighting how these values are essential in building a trustworthy legal system and fostering public confidence in law and justice.
“Ethical behavior, dedication, and continuous learning are the cornerstones of the legal profession,” Justice Jaiteh remarked. “Integrity, professionalism, and accountability are essential not only for personal growth but also for fostering public confidence in law and justice.”
The Importance of Ethics in Law
Justice Jaiteh began his lecture by emphasizing the necessity of ethical behavior in the legal field. He stressed that legal professionals are entrusted with significant responsibilities and that ethical lapses can have wide-reaching consequences for both individuals and society at large. Without ethics, he cautioned, the foundation of the legal system would be weakened, compromising the principles of justice and fairness.
The students were urged to approach their studies with seriousness and dedication. Justice Jaiteh reminded them that law is not merely an academic pursuit but a profession that directly impacts lives. He stressed that hard work and commitment during their studies would lay the foundation for their future careers and enable them to become effective agents of positive change in Gambian society.
Commitment to Justice and Advocacy for the Marginalized
A central message of the lecture was the responsibility lawyers have to advocate for justice, particularly for marginalized groups who often lack access to legal representation. Justice Jaiteh reminded the students that the legal profession is about more than personal advancement; it is a service to society. Lawyers, he noted, must ensure justice is served and give a voice to the voiceless.
Lifelong Learning in Law
Justice Jaiteh also highlighted the importance of continuous learning in the legal profession. He noted that law is an ever-evolving field, and lawyers must remain adaptable by constantly improving their knowledge and skills. This commitment to lifelong learning, he said, is not just a necessity but a hallmark of a truly dedicated legal professional.
Justice Jaiteh’s lecture served as both a source of inspiration and practical guidance for the students. His message was clear: success in the legal profession requires ethics, dedication, a commitment to justice, and an ongoing desire to learn. As the students prepare for their future roles, they were encouraged to internalize these values to shape the future of The Gambia’s legal landscape.
