Kafuta Tragedy: Death Toll Rises to Four, Police Investigate Truck Driver’s Role

Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – The death toll from the tragic road accident in Kafuta has risen to four, with The Gambia Police Force confirming the updated fatalities on Monday. The incident, which occurred on Sunday, left 44 individuals injured, with 24 victims still admitted at Ndemban Clinic as of the latest reports.

Eyewitness accounts point to a speeding truck driver as the cause of the calamity. The driver reportedly swerved erratically through traffic before losing control and plowing into a jubilant crowd of football fans. The fans were returning home from the knockout final between Swe Gam FC and Baduma Utd FC when the incident unfolded.

Initial police updates revealed one fatality and dozens of injuries shortly after the tragedy. While many victims received treatment and were discharged at Brikama Health Centre, the condition of those remaining at Ndemban Clinic remains unclear.

The police have identified the truck driver as a 30-year-old male who is currently in custody. Authorities have confirmed that he will face charges in court on Tuesday as investigations continue.
