Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL) – Today, as Labour Day is observed in The Gambia, the nation joins the global community in recognizing the vital contributions of workers and the pivotal role of labour in national development. This year’s theme, “Accelerating job creation for economic growth,” highlights a commitment to advancing the country’s prosperity through meaningful employment generation and economic transformation.
Hon. Baboucarr Ousmaila Joof, the Minister of Trade, Industry, Regional Integration and Employment, emphasized that this theme serves as a clarion call to action, aligning with the objectives outlined in The Gambia’s new National Development Plan 2023 – 2027 (Yiriwa). The plan aims to steer the country towards a brighter future, overcoming past challenges and fostering sustainable and inclusive growth.
Minister Joof highlighted the government’s intensified efforts to address labour issues, including the determination of a National Minimum Wage. To this end, the government has reconstituted the five Joint Industrial Councils (JIC) and added two new ones for Domestic workers and the hotels and Hospitality Industry. These councils play a crucial role in setting standards and ensuring fair working conditions.
Furthermore, the government is reviewing several legislative instruments, such as the Factory Act, the Injury Compensation Act, and the Trade Union Bill. The objective is to enhance the welfare of workers and ensure the effective functioning of the labour market for the benefit of all stakeholders.
“I want to reaffirm that the government of H.E. Adama Barrow is committed to the welfare of workers and employers alike. We consider these two groups as critical agents of development in any economy,” stated Minister Joof, underscoring the government’s dedication to promoting a conducive environment for sustainable economic growth and job creation.
Labour Day serves as a reminder of the importance of labour rights, fair working conditions, and the need for continuous efforts to improve the welfare of workers. The Gambia’s commitment to advancing these principles reflects its determination to build a prosperous and inclusive society for all its citizens.
