Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – The community members of Lamin CDC have expressed deep concern regarding eviction notices they received from the Office of the Sheriff Division related to plots of land they purchased from the Asset Management Recovery Corporation (AMRC). In a letter dated August 8, 2024, addressed to the Managing Director of AMRC, the residents sought immediate intervention to prevent their forced eviction.
The residents highlighted that in 2013, AMRC sold 282 plots of land in Lamin CDC, a community situated near Yundum Airport. The buyers obtained legal documents, including title deeds, and have since built homes and established families. However, recent eviction orders issued on July 17 and July 23, 2024, have caused considerable distress. The notices mandate residents to vacate their homes by August 19 and August 23, respectively.
The Lamin CDC community noted that despite informing AMRC about the issue and providing a list of property owners, they have not received any acknowledgment or response. This silence has left them anxious and uncertain.
In their letter, the residents underscored the legitimacy of AMRC as a government institution established by an act of parliament and emphasized their commitment to resolving the dispute.
The community demands revocation of eviction orders from July 17 and 23, land ownership assurance for all AMRC land buyers, and transparent and just dispute resolution to protect community investments and ensure the protection of third-party conflicts.
The Lamin CDC community underscores that if no action is taken, they are prepared to pursue legal remedies to defend their rights.
The community emphasized their resolve to take legal action if necessary to safeguard their homes and livelihoods. They also urged AMRC and other concerned institutions to prioritize the well-being and security of the residents by finding an amicable resolution.
In light of the economic difficulties many Gambians face, the Lamin CDC community called for swift intervention to protect their rights and prevent displacement. They concluded by expressing their readiness to engage constructively and seek a just outcome for all parties involved.
The community members await a prompt response from AMRC and hope for collaborative efforts to resolve this critical issue.
