The League of Imams and Preachers of Senegal (Lips) has issued a press release expressing deep concern over the actions of Imam Oumar Diène, who recently called on the new President of the Republic, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, to grant envelopes as a “soukeurou koor” on the eve of the Korité festival. Lips, through its President Imam Ahmed Dame Ndiaye, emphasized that it cannot tolerate such behavior, describing the demand as a request to respect a nebulous tradition.

In the press release, Lips extended warm wishes to the Senegalese Muslim community for the Feast of Eid el-Fitr, marking the end of Ramadan. The organization expressed its desire for unity during religious holidays and stressed the importance of this unity becoming the norm.

The statement highlighted Lips’ dedication to promoting the noble practice of Islam, virtuous governance, and preserving the dignity of imams and religious leaders. It underscored that any behavior contrary to these principles cannot be accepted.

In light of the demand made by Imam Oumar Diène, Lips called on the authorities to reflect deeply on the status of religion in the Republic and formalize relations between the State and religion. These measures, according to Lips, should consider the legitimate needs of the Senegalese Muslim community with dignity. The organization emphasized that any request conflicting with these principles should not be accepted.

Lips’ statement comes amid ongoing discussions about the role of religion in Senegal’s society and governance, emphasizing the need for a clear break with past practices and the establishment of a new Republic in line with the country’s values and identity.
