Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – FANTANKA recently hosted a powerful screening of Living with the Scars, a memorialization film that sheds light on the tragic events of April 10 and 11, 2000. The event, part of the organization’s post-Truth, Reconciliation, and Reparations Commission (TRRC) project, gathered a diverse audience of survivors, civil society organizations, students, and security sector representatives from across The Gambia to reflect on the nation’s painful history.

The screening provided an emotional platform for survivors to recount the injustices they endured during the student protests that turned violent, leaving several dead and many injured. One survivor’s poignant words captured the collective sentiment:

“Those days remain a painful part of our collective memory, serving as a reminder of the dark times we lived through.”

Dialogue for Change

The event featured a panel discussion on Strengthening Student-Security Relations through Effective Communication Channels and Collaboration. Representatives from the security sector, the University of The Gambia, and student bodies explored strategies to build mutual understanding and prevent future tragedies.

Sainey Ceesay, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Representative, emphasized the importance of addressing systemic issues:
“As we reflect on this painful history, we must recognize that such events are not isolated. They are the product of systemic injustices, human rights violations, and a failure to listen to the voices of the oppressed.”

Art and Inspiration

The evening concluded with stirring performances by celebrated Gambian artists, including Jali Suso, Molze, and Nyancho aka Apachaky. Their art resonated deeply with the attendees, leaving them inspired and united in their commitment to a safer and more just future.

FANTANKA expressed gratitude to UNDP The Gambia for funding the event and enabling this critical initiative to honor the past and foster national healing. By reflecting on the scars of history, the organization hopes to contribute to meaningful reforms and a brighter future for all Gambians.
