President Macky Sall of Senegal expressed disappointment and criticized what he described as a “nauseating” international campaign following his decision to sign a decree repealing the convening of the electoral college. Speaking on Thursday, President Sall defended his actions, stating, “I did not violate any rules. I am a free man. I denounce it.”
The President expressed sadness over the reaction of Senegal’s partners, stating, “partners who are with Senegal, who work with us on the same principles, when something happens in our country, must first come to the source, see what exactly is happening, instead of being satisfied with comments which peremptorily condemn, sometimes very violently, the President of the Republic, Senegal. It made me sad.”
President Sall emphasized that Senegal has not violated any law, stating, “No one can say that the President of the Republic, by repealing the decree convening the electoral college, was not within his rights.” He also highlighted Senegal’s adherence to the rule of law, referring to the legislative procedure and the annulment by the Constitutional Council of the law postponing the presidential election and the decree repealing the convocation of the electoral body. President Sall concluded by affirming, “Senegal is a true state of law.”
