Gambiaj.com – (DAKAR, Senegal) – The Mo Ibrahim Foundation has announced the appointment of former Senegalese President Macky Sall, and two other officials, as new members to its Council and Ibrahim Prize Committee. The move marks a new chapter in Sall’s post-presidency as he joins an influential body dedicated to promoting excellence in African leadership.
Macky Sall, who led Senegal from 2012 to 2024, has been a pivotal figure in African politics, holding key leadership roles beyond his nation, including chairing both the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union.
His tenure was defined by efforts to strengthen economic reforms, and regional stability. His inclusion in the Mo Ibrahim Foundation Council signals recognition of his leadership credentials and ongoing influence on the continent’s governance landscape.
Founded by Sudanese-British businessman Mo Ibrahim, the Foundation plays a crucial role in fostering leadership and governance reforms across Africa. It awards the Ibrahim Prize for Achievement in African Leadership to former heads of state who have demonstrated outstanding leadership.
The Prize Committee, an independent body responsible for selecting laureates, also welcomes a new member—H.E. Moussa Faki Mahamat, former President of the African Union Commission and former Minister of Foreign Affairs in Chad.
Alongside Macky Sall, the Foundation’s Council also welcomes Lord Mark Malloch-Brown, former President of the Open Society Foundations and ex-UK Minister for Africa, as well as H.E. Josep Borrell, former High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs.
These appointments bring a wealth of international governance experience to the Foundation, reinforcing its commitment to addressing Africa’s leadership challenges.
Mo Ibrahim, the founder and chair of the Foundation, expressed his enthusiasm for the new additions, stating, “We are delighted to welcome these talented personalities. Their expertise will allow us to approach some of the most pressing challenges that Africa and the world face today.”
As part of the Mo Ibrahim Foundation, Macky Sall will contribute to shaping strategies that influence governance and leadership across the continent. His experience in navigating the complexities of African politics, economic development, and regional diplomacy is expected to be a valuable asset to the Foundation’s mission.
The appointment further cements his standing as one of Africa’s leading statesmen, ensuring his voice remains central to continental governance discourse beyond his presidency.
