President Macky Sall of Senegal, in a recent interview with the BBC ahead of the presidential election, and two weeks before the end of his mandate, stated that he has no apologies to offer to the Senegalese people as his presidency concludes. He emphasized that he has not committed any faults during his time in office.
Sall highlighted that all actions taken during his tenure were in accordance with the laws and regulations of Senegal, with no legal or judicial institution questioning their sincerity. He pointed out that when Parliament votes on a law, as the head of the Executive, he must consider the facts, which is precisely what has been done.
Responding to a question about Senegalese opponents facing legal issues, Sall clarified that they are not challenging him directly since he declared in July that he would not be a candidate. He emphasized that being in politics does not exempt anyone from accountability before the law.
Sall confirmed that he will step down on April 2 and that there will be a smooth transition of power if the new president is elected in the first round. He stated, “If he is not elected on March 24, I will leave on April 2,” affirming his commitment to a peaceful transfer of power.
