Gambiaj.com – (Dakar, Senegal) – Malick Ndiaye, a 41-year-old member of the African Patriots of Senegal for Work, Ethics, and Fraternity (Pastef-Les Patriotes), was elected speaker of the National Assembly on Monday by a significant majority, marking a pivotal moment in Senegal’s political landscape.
Ndiaye, who previously served as Minister in charge of Land Infrastructure and Land and Air Transport, resigned from his ministerial position before his election. The move addressed questions raised about the compatibility of his dual roles as a minister and a deputy in the legislature.
The election session, presided over by Alla Kane, the oldest member of the 15th legislature, saw deliberations on the legal procedures governing Ndiaye’s candidacy. Kane read Ndiaye’s resignation letter aloud, confirming the formal end of his ministerial duties, and allowed the election process to proceed.
A New Chapter in Leadership
Ndiaye, who holds advanced degrees in management, international trade, transport, and logistics, has been a prominent figure in the Pastef party, serving as its spokesperson. His rise to the National Assembly presidency elevates him to the second-highest position in the state hierarchy, reflecting his growing influence in Senegalese politics.
Speaking after the election, Ndiaye emphasized his commitment to fostering robust legislative processes and ensuring the assembly serves the nation’s interests effectively.
Legal Queries and Political Dynamics
The session was not without controversy. Pastef MP Guy Marius Sagna raised questions about the legality of the procedures used to appoint Ndiaye. While these concerns underscored the tension surrounding the leadership transition, they did not impede the election’s conclusion.
Ndiaye’s leadership comes at a time of significant challenges and opportunities for Senegal, with the National Assembly poised to play a crucial role in shaping policy and governance.
