Gambiaj.com – (Banjul, The Gambia) – Mambury Njie is the Gambia’s new ambassador to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, replacing Omar Gibril Sallah, who served in the post for several years, an official source confirmed.
Njie, a seasoned economist and international affairs expert, brings to the role over three decades of experience spanning government service, international diplomacy, and private sector leadership.
Currently, Njie serves as Special Advisor for Economic and Financial Integration and Partnerships at the ECOWAS Commission, where he focuses on regional economic policy and cooperation among West African states and international institutions.
His appointment comes at a time of growing diplomatic and economic ties between The Gambia and Saudi Arabia, and his deep background in finance, foreign relations, and strategic development is expected to enhance bilateral cooperation between the two nations.
Mr. Njie holds a master’s degree in international affairs with a concentration in economic policy management from Columbia University in the United States and a bachelor’s degree in economics and political science from East Stroudsburg University, also in the U.S.
Throughout his distinguished career, Njie has held several senior positions in the Gambian government, including two terms as Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs (2010–2012 and 2018–2022), Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of Economic Planning and Industrial Development, and Minister of Higher Education. He also served as Secretary General and Head of the Civil Service, where he played a central role in public sector reform and strategic policy development.
He was instrumental in launching key national initiatives such as the Public Finance Management reforms and the Programme for Accelerated Growth and Employment (PAGE), which aimed to strengthen fiscal transparency and drive economic development.
On the diplomatic front, Njie previously served as The Gambia’s ambassador to Taiwan, the Philippines, and the United Arab Emirates. He also held the positions of Ambassador-at-Large and Special Advisor to the President on Economic Affairs and Energy, where he helped mobilize critical development resources and foster international partnerships.
Beyond public service, he has held several prominent roles in the private sector, including Chief Executive Officer of the Social Security and Housing Finance Corporation (SSHFC), Managing Director of the Gambia National Petroleum Corporation, and Chairman of a leading commercial bank.
His vast expertise in economic governance, diplomacy, and institutional leadership is expected to reinforce The Gambia’s engagement with Saudi Arabia, particularly in areas of economic cooperation, energy, investment, and support for Gambian nationals residing in the kingdom.
Mr. Njie is set to assume his duties in Riyadh in the coming weeks.
