Man Escapes Death After Jumping From Ferry in Banjul

Man jumped over ferry

Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – A man believed to be not in his right state of mind was rescued on Tuesday after jumping from a ferry near the Banjul ramp during a period of intense operations by The Gambia Ferry Services (GFS).

According to a notice issued by the Office of the Public Relations Officer of GFS, the incident occurred as large numbers of passengers were crossing to attend various gamos (thanksgiving ceremonies), putting additional pressure on ferry services.

Eyewitnesses said the unidentified man suddenly leapt into the water near the ramp, triggering an immediate emergency response.

Two members of the ferry’s safety team, Buba Drammeh and engineer trainee Assan Ndure, acted swiftly, diving into the water and successfully rescuing him.

The rescue took place in the presence of several senior managers of The Gambia Ferry Services, including the General Manager.

Following the incident, management promptly arranged a vehicle with police escorts to transport the man to hospital for medical attention.

GFS praised the courage and professionalism of its personnel, noting that their quick action prevented a potential tragedy during what was already a high-risk operational period due to heavy passenger traffic.
