Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – The Ministry of Health has announced that all pilgrims returning from the 2024 Hajj pilgrimage are required to undergo a Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT) for COVID-19 upon arrival at Banjul International Airport. This measure aims to prevent the possible spread of the virus within the country.
In a press release issued Tuesday and signed by Dr. Buba Manjang, Director of Public Health Services, the Ministry of Health is appealing for public support and cooperation in its efforts to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. Returning pilgrims who test positive at the airport are advised to observe several precautions. They should maintain social distancing and wear masks at all times. If symptoms develop, they should report to the nearest health facility and seek medical attention at Ndemban Clinic if needed.
Proper mask usage is crucial; masks should fully cover the nose and mouth, and hands should be clean when putting on and removing the mask. Avoiding poorly ventilated or crowded spaces is also essential, and improving ventilation indoors by opening windows can help reduce risk.
Regular hand hygiene is emphasized, with recommendations to wash hands with soap and water or use hand sanitizer. The Ministry stresses that widespread mask-wearing should be adopted as a “new normal” until the viral spread is extremely low or sufficient immunity is achieved through vaccination.
In addition to these measures, the Ministry encourages everyone to get vaccinated, including receiving booster shots. For further information, the public can contact the Ministry of Health through their toll-free line: 1025.
