Gambiaj.com – (DOUALA, Cameroon) – Our Gambia’s trailblazing Mariam Gina Bass, has claimed the title of the fastest new African 100m queen with a remarkable time of 11.14 seconds. This victory adds to her African Games championship from a few months ago in Accra, further solidifying her status as a top sprinter in Africa.
In a thrilling race, Bass edged out Liberia’s Maia McCoy, who finished just behind her with a time of 11.16 seconds, maintaining her position from the African Games. Maboundou Kone of Cote d’Ivoire secured the bronze medal, crossing the line in 11.24 seconds.
Bass’s consistent performances in major competitions demonstrate her speed and determination on the track. Her impressive times and fierce competition have marked her as a force to be reckoned with in the world of athletics, showcasing her potential to compete on the global stage.
With this medal secured in the African championship, Gina can now focus on her signature distance, the 200 meters, where she hopes to continue her streak of outstanding performances. Additionally, she will participate in the 4×100-meter relay, further contributing to her team’s efforts.
However, the competition was not without controversy. Several notable athletes, including Ivorian sprinter Marie-Josée Ta Lou-Smith, withdrew from the games, citing poor organization. Ta Lou-Smith expressed her dissatisfaction with the treatment of athletes on her social media pages, highlighting the challenges faced by competitors.
Despite these issues, Mariam Gina Bass’s triumph in Accra underscores her talent and determination, making her a shining example of athletic excellence in Africa.
