Gambiaj.com – (Banjul, the Gambia) A new political movement, Unite Movement Gambia (UMG) has been launched by Talib Ahmed Bensuda, Mayor of the Kanifing Municipal Council, pledging to create more opportunities for young people.

In a statement to the nation, Bensuda highlighted the struggles facing the country, describing The Gambia as one of the poorest nations in the world, where many citizens lack access to basic services such as clean water, electricity, education, and healthcare. He expressed particular concern for the youth, who make up 70 percent of the population and face limited opportunities, forcing many to risk dangerous journeys abroad.

“Last year alone, 1,200 Gambian youths lost their lives trying to reach Europe,” Bensuda said. “Many others are detained, tortured, or eventually deported back home to a life of hopelessness.”

Bensuda described the movement as a platform for change that will transform into a political party representing all Gambians, at home and abroad. He urged citizens to register on the movement’s website or contact the team to join the initiative.

While announcing his decision, Bensuda expressed gratitude to the United Democratic Party (UDP) and its leader, acknowledging their support and pledging respect for their contributions.

“This is a call for all Gambians, young and old, male or female, home or abroad, to unite for change,” he said. “The tragedies our youth are facing should be unacceptable. We must succeed together as one nation or fail as individuals.”

The mayor’s statement comes amid ongoing discussions about political reform and youth empowerment in The Gambia, signaling a new chapter in the country’s efforts to address its socio-economic challenges.
