Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – A mob of youths in Gunjur on Tuesday night vandalized the Gambia Immigration Department (GID) post in the coastal village while protesting the arrest of three suspected drug peddlers by the Drug Law Enforcement Agency (DLEAG).
According to an official immigration police notice, the incident occurred on Tuesday, 27 January 2026, at about 20:00 hours, at the GID Gunjur Immigration Post, which also hosts DLEAG personnel.
The youths were reportedly angered by the arrest of the suspects, who had been apprehended by DLEAG field operatives and subsequently transported to Kotu.
Although the suspects were no longer at the station, the protesters targeted the immigration post, throwing stones at the complex. The attack caused damage to the roof, office doors, and windows of the facility. Authorities confirmed that no personnel were injured during the incident.
In response, officers of the GID and DLEAG in Gunjur launched a joint operation, leading to the arrest and detention of about 20 suspects within the village. The detainees are currently undergoing screening and are expected to be handed over to the Gambia Police Force for further investigations.
The Gambia Immigration Department strongly condemned what it described as an act of vandalism and lawlessness, warning that such actions pose life-threatening risks to security personnel deployed to serve communities.
The department urged residents to exercise restraint, support law enforcement agencies, and help safeguard the safety of security officers and government facilities.
