Gambiaj.com – (FAJARA) – The Medical Research Council Unit The Gambia at London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (MRCG at LSHTM) is joining the global community in celebrating World Immunisation Week, which runs from 24th to 30th April. This year’s celebration is particularly special as it coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI), highlighting the tremendous progress made in global immunisation efforts and the crucial role of vaccination in public health.
MRCG, in collaboration with the Government and People of The Gambia, has played a pivotal role in the development of the EPI vaccine programme across sub-Saharan Africa. The unit has conducted groundbreaking trials of key vaccines to prevent diseases like meningitis, pneumonia, and malaria, leading to the introduction of these vaccines across the continent.
Professor Ed Clarke, Lead for Vaccines and Immunity Theme at MRCG, expressed gratitude to the people of The Gambia for their significant contribution to this lifesaving work. He noted that Gambian communities have been instrumental in supporting vaccine trials and combating vaccine hesitancy through community engagement efforts.
As part of the activities to mark World Immunisation Week, MRCG is organising two Caravan events. The first event, scheduled for April 24th, will travel from Brikama to Faji Kunda, Sukuta, Westfield, and Fajara. The second event, on April 30th, will journey from Basse to Bansang, Soma, and Keneba.
MRC Unit The Gambia reaffirms its commitment to working closely with the Government and people of The Gambia to save lives and improve health not only within the sub-region but also across the world.
