Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – The Gambia’s National Assembly will officially go on recess from Friday, August 1 to Sunday, August 31, 2025, suspending all plenary and committee activities for the duration of the month. The announcement was made by the Office of the Clerk of the National Assembly, which has informed all ministries, departments, agencies, development partners, and the general public of the scheduled break.
“All businesses and activities (plenary & committee sessions) of the National Assembly will be suspended to allow honorable members to proceed on vacation,” the statement read, adding that no official engagements with National Assembly Members (NAMs) will be entertained during the recess period. Normal business is expected to resume on Monday, September 1, 2025.
However, until the legislative break, one of the Assembly’s high-profile inquiries — the Select Committee on the Sales and Disposal of the Assets of Former President Yahya Jammeh — will continue its business.
The committee has been probing the disposal of assets linked to the former president, focusing on transparency, accountability, and legality of the sales conducted in the post-Jammeh era.
Over recent weeks, several former officials, including the Attorney General and minister of Justice, Dawda Jallow, Surahata Semega Janneh, a former Chairperson of the the Janneh Commission, and Mamadi Kurang, a former Secretary of the Janneh Commission. All have appeared before the committee to explain how Jammeh’s assets were sold, amid revelations of poor oversight and lack of due diligence.
The continuation of the committee‘s work ahead of the recess reflects the urgency and national importance of the probe, which has attracted significant public attention given the scale of assets involved and the need for restitution.
As lawmakers proceed on vacation, the nation’s attention is expected to shift temporarily from the Assembly’s chambers, but the findings of the asset disposal committee are likely to remain a hot topic when sessions resume in September.
