Gambiaj.com – (Serrekunda, The Gambia) – The National Water and Electricity Company (NAWEC) today announced the formal conclusion of its contractual agreement with Karpowership, the Turkish power ship company, effective immediately. This development aligns with NAWEC’s strategic objectives outlined in The Gambia Energy Road Map 2022–2040, which prioritizes greater energy independence through the reactivation of its own power generation facilities and the expansion of sustainable domestic energy sources.
In a press statement released earlier today, NAWEC expressed its gratitude to Karpowership for their “dedication, professionalism, and collaboration” over the years. The utility company also assured the public that comprehensive measures have been implemented to minimize any potential disruptions to the electricity supply during this transition period, emphasizing their commitment to maintaining stable power for the nation.
Concurrently, Karpowership issued its own statement acknowledging the end of the electricity supply agreement, which they stated was due to NAWEC’s decision not to renew the contract. The company highlighted its significant contribution to The Gambia’s power sector, noting that at its peak, it supplied up to 40% of the country’s total electricity demand.
Karpowership and the Gambia’s National Water and Electricity Supply Company Ltd. inked a two-year agreement in February 2018 for the deployment of a 36 MW Powership. The contract was renewed for a further two years in 2020 and for an additional three years in May 2022. Since 2018, Karpowership has operated in The Gambia, providing 40% of the country’s electrical needs.
The company stated it will conclude its operations in the country by the end of May, adhering fully to local regulations.
In the wake of the amicable breakup, Karpowership emphasized its commitment to community development during its tenure in The Gambia, citing numerous initiatives ranging from in-kind donations to infrastructure enhancements and programs supporting children’s welfare.
“It has been an honor to serve the people of The Gambia,” Karpowership’s statement read. The company also indicated its openness to future collaborations that could support The Gambia’s energy ambitions and broader development goals.
This transition marks a significant step in The Gambia’s journey towards energy independence, as envisioned in the national energy roadmap. While the immediate impact on electricity supply remains to be seen, NAWEC’s assurances of preparedness will be closely watched by residents and businesses across the country.
The departure of a major power provider like Karpowership necessitates a robust and efficient execution of NAWEC’s plans to ensure a seamless and reliable energy future for The Gambia.
