Gambiaj.com – (Banjul, The Gambia) – The National Water and Electricity Company (NAWEC) has terminated its Treasury Manager and suspended its Director of Finance amid allegations of financial misconduct. The allegations center on a telephone conversation between the Director of Finance and a purported supplier, which reportedly involved unauthorized financial arrangements in breach of company policies and ethical standards.
In a press release issued on December 9, 2024, NAWEC emphasized its zero-tolerance stance on unethical practices, reaffirming its commitment to transparency, accountability, and the safeguarding of public resources.
The utility company announced that it has engaged both its internal compliance team and the Gambia Police Force to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter. NAWEC assured the public that, should the allegations be confirmed, the individuals involved would face disciplinary and legal actions consistent with internal policies and national laws.
“We appeal to the public and the media to exercise restraint while investigations are underway,” the statement read, noting that further updates would be provided as the investigation progresses.
NAWEC’s decisive response is the latest attempt to win back the eroded trust of its stakeholders. The case has sparked public interest, with many awaiting the outcome of the investigations.
Meanwhile, credible sources have confirmed that the police have called Cherno Omar Cham, NAWEC’s Director of Finance, and Babucarr Secka, Treasury Manager, for questioning.
The two were on the phone asking about D3 million in kickbacks from the Indian supplier.
