Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – The National Water and Electricity Company (NAWEC) has confirmed the departure of Marlene Robert-Saidy, Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the Water and Sewage Business Unit, following a mutual decision not to renew her contract. This decision, according to the company, is in the best interests of NAWEC.
Marlene Robert-Saidy, who has been highly regarded by many NAWEC staff, recently faced scrutiny following her husband’s promotion.
Galo Saidy, her husband, was appointed Managing Director of NAWEC, replacing Nani Juwara, who became Minister of Energy. This familial tie in senior management positions within the same organization raised concerns about corporate governance.
Despite a petition from NAWEC staff advocating for Marlene’s retention, the NAWEC Board sought guidance from the State-Owned Enterprises (SOE) Commission.
In its opinion, the Commission emphasized that good corporate governance prohibits both spouses from holding senior positions in the same organization to prevent conflicts of interest and ensure transparency.
This opinion clearly sealed the fate of Mrs. Robert-Saidy within the company.
Marlene’s departure marks the end of a tenure characterized by dedication and leadership. For many at NAWEC, she was more than just a COO; she was a mentor and a source of inspiration. Her departure has left a notable void, as her leadership style and contributions were highly valued by her colleagues.
The issue of corporate governance within state-owned enterprises like NAWEC is of significant importance in The Gambia. Ensuring transparency and avoiding conflicts of interest are critical for maintaining public trust and effective management.
NAWEC now faces the task of finding a suitable replacement for Marlene Robert-Saidy, one who can continue her legacy of leadership while adhering to the principles of good governance.
The company’s board and the SOE Commission’s adherence to governance principles serve as a reminder of the importance of ethical standards in public institutions.
Despite the turbulence surrounding her exit, Marlene Robert-Saidy will be remembered for her contributions and the positive impact she had on the staff and the organization as a whole.
As NAWEC navigates this transition, the focus remains on ensuring that the company continues to provide essential services effectively while maintaining high standards of corporate governance.
