Gambiaj.com – (Banjul, the Gambia) – Sainabou Cham, who was recently re-elected as the President of the women’s football association of the Gambia, has promised to make significant changes in the women’s game within the first six months of her new term. Despite being at the helm of the association for the past 4 years, Cham has faced criticism for the lack of progress in women’s football development in the country. However, she assures that this time, she has concrete plans in place for development. “We are committed to transforming women’s football from the grassroots to the top level, she tells The Gambia Journal.
“Within the next 6 to 12 months, we will launch school-based girls’ football programs across the country and host nationwide youth tournaments to uncover the next generation of talent.”
Over the past years, FIFA has been allocating huge amount of money on women’s football in The Gambia for competitions, development programs and other initiatives.
Women Youth League
As part of her long-term plans, President Cham said his executive is not only focused on strengthening the women’s league, but also working on creating a more competitive league. “A consistent and competitive league calendar is essential. “We plan to introduce regional pre-season tournaments and new U15 and U17 leagues to create clear pathways for players to progress to the national team.”
Women Football Funding and Sponsorship
The President emphasized, “Securing sustainable financial support is a top priority. We are actively pursuing sponsorship deals and applying for international grants from FIFA and CAF. Community involvement through supporters, clubs will also help us build a solid foundation.”
The association is also committed to player welfare. “Protecting our players is fundamental. We are introducing safeguarding policies, medical screenings, and mentorship programs pairing experienced players with youth. Their safety and growth are paramount,” said the President.
The Association envisions The Gambia becoming a regional powerhouse in women’s football. “Our goal is to develop national teams that consistently compete on the continental and global stage. We want a fully structured grassroots system, integrated school and community programs, and professional league setups that retain talent,” the President declared.

Institutional support will be strengthened with “a dedicated Women’s Football Department within the Gambia Football Federation to ensure transparency, good governance, and strategic focus,” the President added. “Financial independence through diverse funding streams and commercial partnerships will make women’s football a valuable and sustainable asset.”
Beyond the pitch, women’s football is seen as a vehicle for social change. “This sport has the power to break down cultural barriers, promote gender equality, and empower women and girls across our nation,” the President said. “We aim to inspire the next generation and embed women’s football firmly in Gambian society.”
