Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – The United Democratic Party (UDP) has suffered yet another major setback following the resignation of 20 executive members and supporters in the West Coast Region. The latest wave of resignations, announced on 27 September 2025, comes amid ongoing internal rifts over the party’s decision to select Ousainou Darboe as its flagbearer for the 2026 presidential election.
In a joint letter addressed to the UDP Administrative Secretary in Banjul, the group — comprising regional executives, constituency chairpersons, women’s wing leaders, campaign managers, and ordinary members — said they were resigning from both their positions and party membership with immediate effect.
“We extend our sincere thanks and appreciation for the cooperation we have received during our time in the Party, and we respectfully ask that our decisions be accepted,” the letter stated.
Among the prominent figures who resigned are Sirimang Kuyateh, Regional Treasurer; Modou Simaga, Deputy Regional Treasurer; Fatou Khan, Women’s Wing Deputy Secretary; Ebrima Ceesay, Kombo East Constituency Chairman; Alagie Njie, Foni Bondali Constituency Chairman; Momodou Jallow Gibba, Foni Berefet Constituency Chairman and All-Foni UDP Chairman; and Daniel Mendy, UDP National Executive Treasurer (co-opted).
Others include Alhagie Camara, Nyambai Ward Regional Chairman; Binta Camara, Sennehmentereng Constituency Women’s Wing Organizing Secretary; Mariama Fofana, Regional Committee Women’s Wing Co-opted Member; and Alhagie SM Jobarteh, Administrator of UDP Online TV Media.
The letter, copied to regional, constituency, and ward secretaries, reflects growing dissatisfaction within the party following Darboe’s confirmation as the UDP’s 2026 presidential candidate — a decision that has sparked a series of resignations across various regions since early September.
Political observers say the scale of the departures, particularly in the vote-rich West Coast Region and the Fonis, signals deeper divisions within the UDP and could have far-reaching implications for its electoral strategy ahead of the 2026 polls.
UDP officials have yet to issue an official response to the latest resignations.
