Gambiaj.com – (Banjul, The Gambia) — This morning, The Gambia’s Vice President, H.E. Mohammed B.S. Jallow, welcomed the Nigerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, along with his delegation at the State House in Banjul. The officials of the two countries had a meeting attended by The Gambia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Dr. Mamadou Tangara, and Secretary to the Cabinet, Mr. Alieu Njie, underscoring the importance of the high-level discussions.
Foreign Minister Tuggar outlined the dual purpose of his visit, representing both Nigeria and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), where Nigeria currently chairs the organization’s Heads of State and Government. “I come wearing two caps,” he explained. “My President serves as the chair of ECOWAS, so I am here on behalf of the community. Additionally, I am here to engage in bilateral discussions with The Gambia.”
During the meeting, Minister Tuggar highlighted The Gambia’s pivotal role within ECOWAS, describing it as a key partner in fostering regional unity and stability. He emphasized the importance of cultural exchange and consistent dialogue as essential elements to deepening relationships among member states. “The Gambia remains one of the central pivots in the dynamics of ECOWAS,” he noted.
Vice President Jallow expressed his appreciation for the visit, sharing insights on potential avenues to bolster ties between the two nations. He highlighted The Gambia’s commitment to regional cooperation, particularly as ECOWAS prepares for a forthcoming summit. Jallow’s remarks underscored The Gambia’s proactive stance on working collaboratively within the region.
In reflecting on the visit, Minister Tuggar expressed satisfaction with the Vice President’s receptive approach. He described the meeting as warm and constructive, noting that the dialogue served as a promising step toward strengthening relations between The Gambia, Nigeria, and the broader ECOWAS community.
The discussions mark a renewed commitment to partnership, fostering closer ties both bilaterally and within the West African region.
