Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – The Gambia Police Force (GPF) has announced progress in its ongoing investigation into a major anti-counterfeit operation in Bakau, which led to the seizure of large sums of suspected fake currency. Authorities recovered $23,100 in suspected counterfeit U.S. dollars and 57.5 million CFA francs in the same category.

Alpha Jallow, also known as Collins Nwoke, a Nigerian national, was arraigned on Thursday, April 17, 2025, before Magistrate K. Baldeh at the Brusubi Magistrates’ Court. He is facing charges of purchasing forged banknotes, a serious offense under Section 334 of the Criminal Code of The Gambia.

According to the police, Jallow pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to him. The prosecution immediately objected to bail, citing the gravity of the offense and the need to present witnesses and evidence.

The court granted the prosecution’s request and ordered that the accused be remanded at Mile 2 State Central Prison pending further proceedings.

The case has been adjourned to April 30, 2025, when the prosecution is expected to begin presenting its case.

In a public statement, the GPF reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the country’s financial system, saying, “The Gambia Police Force remains steadfast in its efforts to combat financial crimes and safeguard the integrity of the national currency system.”

Investigations are ongoing, and authorities have not ruled out the possibility of further arrests or charges in connection with the case.
