Gambiaj.com – (OGUN STATE, Nigeria) – The Nigerian police have intercepted a group of seven individuals suspected to be victims of human trafficking en route to The Gambia, intensifying concerns over the transnational criminal network. The operation, carried out by the Ogun State Police Command, took place along the Oja-Odan/Ohunbe Road in Yewa North Local Government Area on Monday, February 12, 2025.
According to police reports, the victims—aged between 18 and 25—were traveling in a white Volkswagen bus registered under the Anambra State Government when they were stopped. The driver, Ezeani John Paul, along with several passengers, was arrested after failing to provide a convincing explanation for their journey. Authorities reported that the individuals appeared distressed and disoriented when rescued.
Police spokesperson Omolola Odutola confirmed that investigations were underway to determine the full scope of the suspected trafficking operation. The victims—identified as Emmanuel Anyigor (25), John Peter Ogar (18), Chidioke Basil (20), Emecheta Chimaodi (18), Osondu Marvellous (19), Ifeanyi Emmanuel Uchechukwu (18), and Anizoba Chiagozie Emmanuel (18)—have been taken into protective custody for questioning.
The Ogun State police, under the directive of Commissioner of Police Lanre Ogunlowo, have transferred the suspects and the vehicle to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further probing.
Police authorities are now focused on identifying the masterminds behind the suspected trafficking ring and determining whether The Gambia was a transit point or the final destination for the victims.
