Gambiaj.com – (DAKAR, Senegal) – Nine police officers from the Zac de Mbao police station in Dakar, have been arrested by the Criminal Investigation Division (DIC) and will be referred to the Prosecutor of the Pikine-Guédiawaye Court on Monday. According to police sources, the officers will be presented alongside three other defendants: their informer and two Malian nationals accused of money laundering.
The police officers are alleged to have been involved in a scheme to steal money seized from a Malian national. The investigation revealed that the officers had arrested the Malian, who was in possession of 600 million CFA francs in cash. However, once at the police station, the officers declared only 400 million CFA francs, pocketing the remaining 200 million CFA francs.
Unbeknownst to the officers, the entire incident was captured by a surveillance camera. The footage clearly showed the officers extracting the extra money from the suitcase and pocketing it. This damning evidence has led to their arrest and will likely result in strong charges being brought against them by the prosecutor.
The Prosecutor of the Pikine-Guédiawaye Court will determine the charges to be brought against the officers and decide on their detention pending trial. The investigation into the case is ongoing, and authorities have indicated that more arrests may follow as they work to root out corruption within the police force.
This incident highlights the ongoing challenges of corruption within law enforcement agencies and underscores the importance of surveillance and accountability in maintaining public trust.
