Gambiaj.com – (Pirang, The Gambia) – Nuha Ndong, the Deputy Ward Chairman and Youth Coordinator of the National People’s Party (NPP) for Pirang Ward in Kombo East, has announced his resignation from the party and declared allegiance to the newly formed National Development Party (NDP).
In a formal letter dated 26 June 2025, addressed to his colleagues in the NPP, Ndong expressed gratitude for the collaboration and unity shared with party members during his tenure. He said he was stepping down from his position with immediate effect.
“It was a great pleasure working with the party,” Ndong wrote in his letter. “As from now I am no longer a member of the party… I am thanking every member of the National People’s Party with all the good rapport during our time in the party and togetherness with peace and harmony.”
Ndong, a native of Bonto village, has been an active youth leader in Pirang Ward since 2022 and played a key role in grassroots mobilization for the ruling party in Kombo East, a politically significant area in The Gambia’s West Coast Region.
His resignation marks the latest in a series of quiet but notable defections from the NPP to the NDP, which was recently launched by dissident former allies of President Adama Barrow.
Though the NDP is still in its formative stages, its emergence has begun to shift political dynamics ahead of the anticipated local government elections and the 2026 general elections.
Political observers say defections like Ndong’s reflect growing discontent among some members of the ruling party’s base, particularly in areas where socio-economic promises remain unmet.
Neither the NPP leadership nor the NDP has officially responded to Ndong’s departure at the time of reporting. However, local political actors anticipate that more realignments may follow as parties begin strategic positioning for the upcoming electoral cycle.
