Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – Police in The Gambia on Monday summoned Mr. Baboucarr Bahoum, a diehard supporter of President Adama Barrow and his National Peoples Party (NPP), for questioning following remarks he made on social media in the aftermath of the Kiang Councillor election. His statements have stirred widespread concern, with authorities citing their potential to incite division and undermine social cohesion. Bahoum was released on bail in the evening.
In a statement, the police emphasized the importance of maintaining public order, especially given the sensitivity of the current political climate. Law enforcement officials described Bahoum’s remarks as possibly fueling tensions and deemed it necessary to assess whether they posed a threat to national unity.
“The invitation forms part of the police’s commitment to safeguarding peace and stability while upholding individuals’ fundamental rights to express their views within the legal and ethical boundaries of responsible civic engagement,” the statement read.
Bahoum responded to the news of his summons by confirming that he had been detained since the morning after being called for interrogation. “I’m on my way home and on bail. Nothing in the world can stop me from standing up for the president and my party,” he declared. “I took it in good faith, and I am 100% fine,” he remarked. And he added. “I’m sorry to the people of kiang and to anybody that is hurt from my statement. I’m sorry.”
Authorities have urged all citizens to be mindful of the impact of their public statements, calling for constructive discourse that promotes national unity.
While the details of Bahoum’s questioning and bail remain undisclosed, the case underscores the growing scrutiny of political commentary in the digital space.
