Gambiaj.com – (Banjul, The Gambia) – The trial of Augustine Bangura, accused of murdering a British woman at his residence, continued with the testimony of Sub Inspector Boye, a police officer involved in the investigation.
Boye, who took the stand as the prosecution’s fourth witness, detailed how he tracked Bangura using call logs and apprehended him in Fajara. He stated that the suspect initially denied involvement but later confessed, admitting to striking the victim with a hammer and burying her body.
Representing the state, Prosecutor Counsel Mariama Singhateh led Boye through his testimony, in which he recounted how investigators recovered D80,000 from Bangura, allegedly stolen from the victim’s home. A key found in the suspect’s possession was later used to access the deceased’s residence, where he reportedly described the manner in which he committed the crime. Police also retrieved the murder weapon.
The officer further testified that Bangura identified various stolen valuables, including electronic devices, later traced to a man named Saikou Samusa at the Bakoteh shopping mall.
During cross-examination, defense counsel F.T. Saho questioned the officer’s familiarity with both Bangura and the victim, probing their relationship and whether they had regular communication. Boye admitted knowing them but could not confirm whether they were friends. He acknowledged that Bangura claimed to have worked for the victim.
Saho also pressed Boye on whether the investigation had uncovered other potential suspects. Boye confirmed that names had surfaced but declined to provide further details. He also admitted he was unaware that fire service personnel had retrieved the victim’s body using a ladder.
The case has been adjourned until March 5, 2025, when the prosecution is expected to call its fifth witness.
