Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The gambia) – Today, we mourn the passing on of our beloved brother and friend of all the world, the one and only Dr. Hector Loum.

But we also celebrate the life and legacy of a truly remarkable individual, a dedicated Medical Doctor, and a talented sportsman who has left an indelible mark on our lives.

Indeed, his untimely demise has now left a void in our communities, especially of erstwhile Half-Die Banjul.

But his memory will continue to live on in our hearts and forever.

As a Medical Doctor, Hector Loum had demonstrated unwavering commitment to his patients, providing compassionate care and expertise that touched countless lives.

His dedication to the medical profession had been most inspiring, and his contributions to the field would therefore be remembered for years to come.

Yes, he was a true healer, with a gift for making his patients feel seen, heard, and cared for.

Yes, his medical expertise was matched only by his kindness, empathy, and understanding.

But his impact hadn’t stopped there.

As an exceptional athlete, he had excelled in various disciplines, showcasing his athleticism, teamwork, and sportsmanship.

Notably, during his school days at the St. Augustine’s Secondary School, he was an outstanding sprinter, dominating the inter-school athletics competitions in the 1960s.

His speed, agility, and determination earned him numerous accolades and trophies, cementing his reputation as one of the school’s most talented athletes ever.

His passion for sports had brought people together, and his legacy would therefore continued to inspire future generations of athletes.

Undoubtedly, he was a shining example of what it means to be a well-rounded individual, with a balance of intellectual curiosity, physical prowess, and emotional intelligence.

In passing, Hector Loum and I competed against each other in the inter-school athletics competitions in the mid-60s.

We, the Gambia High School team, including Saihou Njie “Claude” and myself, won the defining moment ie: the final 4 X 4 relay event against the excellent St. Augustine’s Secondary School team which included the formidable Hector Loum and Abiya.

Unforgettable !!!

More importantly, Hector’s kindness, humility, and generosity of spirit made him a beloved figure in our community.

As such, he had been a true role model, demonstrating that with hard work, determination, and a commitment to excellence, anything was possible.

In so being, he had thus inspired countless young people to pursue careers in medicine and sports, and his legacy would therefore continue to live on through the countless lives that he had touched.

In sum, we would continue to remember his infectious smile, his warm laughter, and his unwavering optimism.

Undoubtedly, he had his own way of making everyone feel welcome and included, and his presence in our lives was indeed a gift.

Yes, he was a mentor, a friend, and a confidant to many, and his guidance and support would therefore also be deeply missed.

Yes, his legacy extends far beyond his impressive achievements.

He truly embodied the values of compassion, empathy, and kindness, and he inspired others to do the same.

Yes, he has shown us that true greatness was not just about achieving success, but about making a positive impact on the lives of those around us.

To his family, colleagues, and friends, we offer our deepest condolences on the irreparable loss of such a remarkable individual.
