Gambiaj.com – (DAKAR, Senegal) – The political scene in Senegal is ablaze following the police summons of Bougane Gueye Dany, leader of the “Gueum sa bop” movement. Many see this action as an attempt to intimidate political figures ahead of the upcoming legislative elections, sparking strong reactions from both the opposition and civil society.
Thierno Alassane Sall, a prominent opposition figure, has openly criticized what he views as the government’s authoritarian tendencies. Highlighting the irony of the situation, he remarked, “Those who once flooded the National Assembly with offensive speeches, exploited the media for relentless attacks, and sought to undermine honest citizens, now seem intolerant of criticism.” Sall’s statement underscores the paradox of a regime that once rose from opposition now attempting to stifle dissent.
Sall, the leader of the Republic of Values party, went further, condemning the politicization of state institutions. He emphasized, “It is hypocritical to promote democracy and freedom of expression in the ECOWAS region while relentlessly pursuing journalists, columnists, and political opponents at home.”
Meanwhile, Alioune Tine, a respected civil society figure, urged for restraint and a return to democratic principles. He stressed the importance of allowing Bougane Gueye Dany to prepare for the elections without interference. “We must let him and his coalition prepare, just like all other political leaders,” Tine stated. He also warned against the criminalization of the opposition, cautioning that such actions could lead Senegal down a dangerous path.
This affair unfolds in a politically charged environment, with Bougane Gueye Dany accusing Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko of using the police and judiciary for political gain. “He is trying to resolve political issues by weaponizing the police, gendarmerie, and the justice system,” Gueye Dany declared in a video message, adding further fuel to the already volatile situation.
The reasons behind the police summons remain unclear, raising concerns about the state of democracy in Senegal. This incident not only highlights escalating tensions between the government and the opposition ahead of crucial elections but also reignites debates about freedom of expression and respect for democratic processes in the country.
Meanwhile, Cheikh Yerim Seck, a journalist who was earlier summoned at the police has been place under detention pending investigations.
