Gambiaj.com – (Banjul, The Gambia) – In a major boost to The Gambia’s security sector reform efforts, the Gambia Police Force (GPF) has graduated 1,333 new recruits following months of intensive training aimed at enhancing professionalism, respect for human rights, and effective crime prevention across the country.

The graduation ceremony, held on August 6th, marks a significant milestone in the government’s broader strategy to restructure and modernize the security sector, a process initiated after the democratic transition in 2017.

The reform seeks to transform security institutions into citizen-centered bodies focused on public safety rather than regime protection.

The new officers completed 70 training modules covering police administration, evidence and procedure, traffic management, criminal and general law, among others. Their training also included extensive physical preparedness through weapons handling, martial arts, and public order management.

Addressing the graduates, Assistant Commissioner of Police Lamin Manka, Commandant of the Police Training School, praised the recruits for their discipline and perseverance.

The intake has persevered and remained persistent, consistent, and constant during the course of the training. As our pioneer batch, we expect them to reach the ceiling as they play their role in the security apparatus of our great country,” ACP Manka said.

He emphasized that the training was coordinated closely with the Police Intervention Unit (PIU) and delivered by subject matter experts from across the GPF to ensure quality and practical readiness.

These recruits are expected to make a difference and inspire their colleagues,” ACP Manka added, noting that simulation exercises were incorporated to instill accountability, respect for human rights, and adherence to the rule of law.

The graduation comes at a time when The Gambia is grappling with rising incidents of crime, particularly in urban centers. Authorities hope that the influx of well-trained officers will help improve law enforcement, build community trust, and support the country’s democratic consolidation.
