Gambiaj.com – (DAKAR, Senegal) – On Monday, as Senegalese Muslims gathered for Korite prayers marking the end of Ramadan, a notable absence raised eyebrows: that of Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko. While President Bassirou Diomaye Faye performed the prayer at the Grande Mosquée of Dakar, Idrissa Seck attended prayers at the Mosanté mosque in Thiès, and former Prime Minister Amadou Ba prayed at the Omarian mosque on Sunday; Ousmane Sonko was nowhere to be seen.
The prime minister’s absence was particularly striking given that he had been publicly visible just days earlier.
On Saturday, he attended the funeral rites of his lawyer, Me Khoureyssi Ba, paying a solemn tribute before accompanying the late advocate to his final resting place at Yoff Cemetery. This event marked his last public appearance before disappearing from the public eye on the day of Korite.
Unlike previous years, when Sonko opted for a low-profile but public prayer session, such as in 2023 when he prayed at the Great Mosque of the Cité Keur Gorgui near his residence, he made no official declaration this year.
His decision to pray away from media attention has fueled speculation about his whereabouts and the reasons behind his absence.
While no official explanation has been provided, the prime minister’s absence from such a significant religious event continues to generate discussion among the public and political observers alike.
