Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – The Gambia Police Force (GPF) has issued a statement clarifying the circumstances surrounding a viral social media video that shows a police officer struggling to arrest a seemingly defiant individual.
According to the police, the incident occurred on Tuesday, April 10, 2025, after a family in the Serrekunda area sought assistance in escorting a relative—described as a known lunatic—for medical attention. During the attempt to help the individual, the police say the person became violent and aggressive, prompting a difficult arrest situation.
“The individual became violent and aggressive towards the officer,” the statement explained. “Fortunately, the suspect was arrested after the intervention and support of bystanders and successfully taken to the hospital for treatment.”
The video, which garnered significant public attention online, raised questions about the officer’s handling of the situation.
In response, the police emphasized that their approach was rooted in compassion and professionalism, particularly given the vulnerable state of the individual involved.
The GPF further appealed to the public to maintain a spirit of cooperation with law enforcement, especially in sensitive situations involving mental health. “The Gambia Police Force remains committed to responding to public safety needs with compassion and professionalism, particularly in cases involving vulnerable persons,” the statement read.
Authorities are urging the public to avoid sharing such videos without context, noting that uninformed speculation can lead to misunderstanding and erode public trust.
The police reaffirmed their dedication to working closely with communities to ensure safety, understanding, and respect for human dignity at all times.
