Police Conclude Investigation into “Unburned Prohibited Drugs” Case, Report Sent to Attorney General

File investigation

Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – The police in The Gambia has concluded its investigation into allegations surrounding the “unburned prohibited drugs” incident, which arose after the public destruction of seized drugs by the Drug Law Enforcement Agency, The Gambia (DLEAG).

Last year, the Drug Law Enforcement Agency in Bakau burned seized drugs, including cocaine, skunk, kush, and cannabis, to demonstrate public accountability and transparency. However, some drugs were not burned, leading to a second scientific test confirming they were not cocaine. Hence the police probe, looking into the missing drugs, to find out what happened.

A press statement issued on Wednesday by the police indicates that an investigative panel convened by the police submitted a comprehensive case docket and report to the police command, which will forward it to the Office of the Attorney General for legal review and potential action.

However, the police statement doesn’t reveal the names of the people the investigation is aimed at or any information about the results of the investigation, such as the type of illegal drug that was concealed or the quantity that was tampered with.

The probe, initiated under the directive of the Ministry of Interior, aimed to examine all allegations rigorously and uphold the integrity of the country’s fight against drug-related crimes, according to the police communications unit.

The Gambia Police Force remains unwavering in its zero-tolerance stance on drugs. Those who attempt to undermine national security through illegal activities will be held accountable,” IGP Touray is quoted in the police statement.

Inspector General of Police Seedy Mukhtar Touray lauded the professionalism and diligence of the panel, emphasizing that their thorough work reflects the police’s commitment to maintaining integrity in its operations. He also thanked the public for their cooperation and patience during the course of the investigation.

The police have called on the public to continue supporting its efforts by reporting any suspicious activities related to drug trafficking or abuse.

This collaborative approach is vital for building a safer and healthier Gambia,” the police statement added.

The case now rests with the Office of the Attorney General, which is expected to review the findings and determine appropriate actions in accordance with the law.
